About Us ::

The School of co-operation was restructured as the National Institute of Co-operative Development with the objectives of providing a new educational approach, enriched with new strategies and methodology with potentiality to face globalization by being deviated from the traditional systems of Co-operative educational prevailed till then .The National Institute of Co-operative Development was established by Act. No. 01of 2001 to function as far as possible as an institution free from obligation to the state maintaining its autonomy so that the co-operative movement and co-operative education can face the challenges of globalization.

The school of Co-operation was establish in 1943 under the department of co-operative development. Main objective was to train to the government offices attached to the co-operative sector.

In order to achieve the above objective, it is necessary to have several contributory factors such as a well organized institute, conduct of relevant courses conforming to a high quality and standard, availability of physical resources to meet with the requirements of trainees, and above all, a pleasant environment conducive for educational activities.  After a period of more than 60 years dedicated service to the coo-operative movement of this country, the institute had to face a structural change and with this new change, the number of courses conducted at the institute, the numbers of trainees as well as physical resources have been increased significantly to meet with the emerging trends. This is an achievement not only for those who were responsible for effecting the change but also for all co-operative of this country. No doubt that is an important step in its progressive march.

There are 08 lecture halls with modern technical and audio visual facilities with a fully equipped stage and an auditorium.

This institute is located in a beautiful surrounding at Polgolla along Kandy-Wattegama main road adjoining Mahaveli reservoir. The distance from Colombo is 121 Kms. The distance from the hill capital of Kandy is 7 kms. The total extent of premises is 24 acres.
